You already know that writing something daily helps you in a lot of ways. Not only to become a better songwriter, but also to develop yourself as a person. It doesn’t matter what you write as long as you write daily. Even a mere 10 to 15 minutes are enough. These 15 minutes can bring in a lot of improvement in your writing. Just to give you a boost, let me show you 8 reasons you should write everyday. Background image used: Business photo created by freepik – www.freepik.com
1. To become a better writer
The first and the most obvious reason, you should write everyday because it makes you a better writer. A good writer is not someone who has a huge vocabulary or who writes in a sophisticated language, but someone who can make the readers see something through his eyes. And you can reach there only when you write a lot. Writing a few minutes daily can surely help you reach there.
2. To process your thoughts
Another good reason is that writing helps you process your thoughts. When you write a journal entry, or maybe a stream of consciousness, your thoughts will automatically get processed. The ideas will get saved, and the negative thoughts will get dumped. So writing daily will help you clear your head, especially when you’re feeling overwhelmed. It has happened to me a lot of times that I’m unable to contain my thoughts. And it took me really long to realise that I need to put it down on paper. That’s the only way I can find relief.
3. To understand your inner self
I do not sit down at my desk to put into verse something that is already clear in my mind. If it were clear in my mind, I should have no incentive or need to write about it. We do not write to be understood; we write to understand. – Cecil Day-Lewis
These lines by C Day Lewis are true to the core. We write so that we can understand what’s going on inside our heads. To understand things which we can’t otherwise. There is so much going on inside our mind, that sitting and pondering upon it can’t help. We need to put it down on paper so that it can make some sense.
4. To maintain a record of your day
Maintaining a record of your day, as in a daily journal, not only helps you develop yourself, but also to improve your craft. Whether you’re a songwriter, a blogger, writing a novel, or anything else, when you have a collection of daily journal entries, you have so much material. You can use it in your songs, novel, stories, articles, or whatever you’re writing.
5. Helps you overcome writer’s block
Do you know the only thing that can help you overcome a writer’s block? You guessed it right! To keep writing until you find something interesting. We encounter a writer’s block many times and all we can do is to keep writing. So when you are writing something everyday, it is very much likely that even if you encounter a block, you will overcome it very soon.
6. To find an escape from the hustle and bustle of the world
Life becomes exhausting in the hustle and bustle of the world and you need an escape from it every now and then. What can be more refreshing than finding a peaceful place and writing your heart out? It will also help you get away from technology for a while and will clear up your mind.
7. To find ideas and inspiration
Ideas! They can come anytime and anywhere. You need to have a prepared mindset so that you can realise when an idea strikes so that you can save it. Sometimes when you are free writing, you will encounter some really good ideas and inspiration which can be then turned into a piece of art depending upon what your form of writing is – a song, a short story, a part in your novel, etc. There are lot of things stored in your subconscious which only come out when you write. Carry around a pocket notebook so that whenever something interesting crosses your mind, you can write it down immediately.
8. To tone up your writing style
Everybody has a unique writing voice and it is developed over time. When you are writing for yourself, your writing voice shapes up. That’s what I believe and I’ve experienced. Initially when I started writing songs, they mostly sounded like the people who are my inspiration. I was able to develop my own style through writing regularly, free writing, and having conversations with my diary or myself.
That’s all. 8 reasons you should write everyday. Start developing a habit of writing daily and you’ll see the results yourself!
